Folk song is a type of song sung in the traditional style of a country or community. Usually it is regarded as rural people's song. Folk song includes the lifestyle of the rural people. Folk song represents all their hopes, expectations, sorrows and dreams. However, folk song is one of the most important element of Bangladeshi culture. The major folk song of our country are Baul, Bhatiali, Murshidi, Marfati, Jarigan, Jatragan, Shari gan, Gamvira etc. Some of the well-known folk singers in Bangladesh are Lalon Shah, Abbus Uddin, Abdul Alim, Shah Abdul Karim, Momtaz and so on. Folk songs are sung by professional singers. The traditional musical instruments of our country are Tabla, Dhol, Madal, Ekatara, Bansi, Kartal, Dotara, Sarad, Sarinda etc. At present the young generation show less interest in folk song. In general, band and pop music are becoming more and more popular among the young generation. Since folk song symbolizes our own culture and tradition, we should keep ourselves with folk song.
